What is Spirulina?

As a health supplement, Spirulina algae is an extremely high protein source with a protein content 60-70 percent higher than any other natural food and most nutritional products. This superfood has the most remarkable concentration of functional nutrients ever known in food - animal or plant. Spirulina contains high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients which include the essential fatty acids, GLA fatty acid, lipids, the nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), B complex, vitamin C and E and phytochemicals, such as carotenoids, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin. Spirulina is a low fat, low calorie, cholesterol-free. Spirulina's green color comes from an abundance of the plant pigments chlorophyll and beta-carotene.

How to take Spirulina?

Perhaps the best feature of Spirulina is that the body very well assimilates its nutrients, since it contains no cellulose in its cell walls. The recommended daily intake is 1-5 grams, but if you feel like consuming more, go ahead. Spirulina powder can be added to fruit or vegetable juices or to dishes to enhance nutritional content. It is tasty in soups, salads, pasta, or mixed with yoghurt. Spirulina crunchy is nice to eat as a snack or as a seasoning on your dishes, bread or salads, only avoid cooking it as a lot of nutrients (esp. vitamins) will get lost that way. Special tip: make a fresh lemon juice (or use lemon syrup), add a teaspoon of Spirulina, stir well and drink it straight away. The vitamin C of the lemon (Spirulina doesn't contain vitamin C) will help with absorbing the nutrients. Spirulina capsules (vegetarian), tablets, powder and crunchy are convenient to take at any time of the day.

Low GI foods that are slow to break down into sugars are better for you, high GI foods produce a rapid rise in blood sugar that trigger an increase in insulin which then lowers your blood sugar, the result = food cravings! Spirulina is the richest natural source of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) and provides three times more GLA than evening primrose oil.
